Fractional CFO vs Fractional FD: is there really a difference?

You have been researching senior finance help, and you have seen the same sort of service called four different things: Fractional CFO, Fractional FD, Portfolio FD, Part-time FD. It is enough to make you wonder whether these are genuinely different jobs, or the same thing dressed up in different words, and whether you are supposed to want one rather than another.

Here is the straight answer, because you deserve one and not a fog of jargon: for a small or medium-sized business, these terms are essentially interchangeable. They all point to the same thing, senior, experienced finance leadership on a part-time basis. The label matters far less than what the person actually does for your business. But since the words do carry slightly different flavours, let us clear it up properly, and explain why we have chosen to call it FD.

The terms, and what they really mean

Taken at face value, here is roughly what each word is reaching for:

  • CFO. Chief Financial Officer. A more American term, and in its truest sense a board-level, big-company title.

  • FD. Finance Director. The British equivalent in spirit, and the term that best fits how senior finance works inside a growing SME.

  • Fractional / Portfolio / Part-time. Both just describe the arrangement: senior finance expertise bought part-time, a fraction of a full-time role, or several such roles held across different businesses.

Strip away the styling and they converge on the same thing: someone who has done senior finance for years, giving you their judgement for the days you actually need, rather than as a full-time hire. Fractional CFO, Fractional FD, Portfolio FD, Part-time FD, in the SME world these are the same animal wearing different collars.

So why do we say FD, not CFO?

Partly it is simply that FD is the British term, and we are a British firm serving British businesses. But there is a more useful reason, and it says something about what an SME actually needs.

In our experience, only the very largest companies have a true CFO, and the role there is not what most owners picture. In a FTSE 100 business, the CFO is largely an outward-facing figure: they spend their time with investors, analysts and the City, presenting the numbers to the market rather than working inside the business day to day. It is a serious, high-level job, but it is a corporate, external one. It is not someone close enough to your business to shape the numbers and steer the decisions week to week.

That is not what a growing SME needs, and it is not what we do. An SME needs a blend of the strategic and the genuinely involved: someone who will shape the financial direction and build the forecast, and who is close enough to design the right management-accounts pack, choose the metrics that actually matter, and bring sharp, plain-English commentary to the board table so you can make real decisions. Not doing the bookkeeping, that is a more junior job, but owning the numbers and what they mean. That combination of commercial, strategic and hands-on-where-it-counts is exactly what Finance Director describes best. CFO, in its truest sense, points at a role most SMEs will never need.

If you are searching “CFO”, you are still in the right place

None of this means you are wrong to search for a Fractional CFO. Plenty of excellent providers use that label, and plenty of owners type it because it is the word they have heard. If that is you, relax, you are in exactly the right place. We would simply rather be honest about the term than ride a more impressive-sounding word that does not quite fit.

What actually matters is not the title on the tin. It is whether the person has genuinely done the job, whether they bring the right mix of strategic and hands-on, and whether they will make a real difference to your business. Focus your energy there, on the substance, not the label, and you will make a far better decision than by chasing whichever acronym sounds grandest.

The honest takeaway

Fractional CFO, Fractional FD, Portfolio FD, Part-time FD: for an SME, treat them as the same thing and judge the person, not the label. We use FD because it is the honest, British description of what a growing business genuinely needs, senior finance leadership that is strategic and hands-on, not a corporate figurehead who talks to the City. Everything else is just wording.

If you are weighing up how much finance leadership you need and in what form, fractional vs part-time vs full-time FD is the natural next read, and you can see how we work on our Fractional FD service page.

We work with owner-founders and MDs across Yorkshire and the North East who want senior finance help and do not much care what it is called, as long as it works. If that is you, the label is the least interesting part of the conversation.
